What is TAN ?
TAN Number is a 10 Digit Alphanumeric Number and is used as an abbreviation for Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number.
Any business or individual who is required to deduct TDS or collect TCS is required while making specified nature of payments such as Rent, Salary, Commission etc need to apply for a TAN No. and shall quote this number in all TDS Returns, TDS Payments and any other communication regarding TDS with the Income Tax Department.
TAN structure is as follows:
DELB99999B: First four characters are letters, next five are numerals, last character is a letter. The first three characters represent the city or state where the TAN was issued and the next 5 characters are numeric.
Tax deducted at source (TDS) ensures that the Government's collection of tax is proponed and the responsibility for paying tax is diversified. The person deducting the tax at source is required to deposit the tax deducted to the credit of Central Government - quoting the TAN number.
