Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) – Introduction

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) is India’s new criminal law that replaces the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC).
It defines criminal offences, punishments, and criminal liability in a modern and simplified legal framework.

The objective of BNS is to:

• Modernise criminal law
• Focus on justice instead of punishment alone
• Address new-age crimes
• Use simpler and clearer language

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) replaces the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and contains 358 sections.
